Scientists at the Weizmann Institute screened more than 1,300 people to find 120 who never touch sweeteners. A clean slate. The perfect test group.
They split them up. One group got sucralose. Another got saccharin. The rest got aspartame or stevia — each at a dose under the FDA daily limit, for two weeks.
The sucralose and saccharin groups watched their blood-sugar response climb. Then the team moved those people’s gut microbes into mice… and the mice spiked the same way. So the bugs were driving it. What were they doing down there to cause it?
How a sweet taste with no sugar still moves your blood sugar
Your gut bacteria feed, talk, and send little molecules into your blood all day. Sweeteners change that chatter. The mix of bugs shifts, the molecules they release shift, and your body reads sugar differently at your next meal.
Then there’s a second hit. A lab at NC State found your body turns sucralose into a byproduct called sucralose-6-acetate. In the dish, it broke up the DNA of gut cells and stressed the bacteria around them.
One sweetener keeps showing up in the worst of these findings. Its name sits on a yellow packet.
Meet sucralose — the yellow-packet sweetener in your “diet” drink
Sucralose goes by Splenda on the shelf. It’s about 600 times sweeter than sugar, so a speck flavors a whole can. You’ll spot it in diet sodas, “zero” sports drinks, flavored seltzers, sugar-free gum, and lots of protein powders.
Saccharin — the pink packet, Sweet’N Low — hit blood sugar just as hard in that trial. Aspartame and stevia moved the gut bugs too, even while they left blood sugar alone.
The upside? Your gut bounces back fast once the sweetener stops coming. You just need something else to pour.
