Your dishwasher leaves a dried film on every glass you own
Pull a glass off the top rack. It looks spotless. That shine is the whole job of the bottle you refill.
But that shine is left behind on purpose. Rinse aid dries onto the glass in a thin film, so water sheets off instead of beading up into spots. It is still sitting there when the cycle ends.
So you swallow it with the water. Every glass carries a small dose. Swiss scientists wanted to know what that dose does to your gut lining.
That is one teaspoon stirred into 26 gallons of water. And at weaker doses the cells lived, but stopped holding on to each other.
Rinse aid residue opened gaps between the cells of a lab-grown gut lining
The work came out of the Swiss Institute of Allergy and Asthma Research in Davos. Ismail Ogulur ran it under Cezmi Akdis. They grew sheets of gut cells and mini guts called organoids.
Then they applied what a commercial dishwasher leaves on a plate. The barrier gave way. Electrical resistance across the sheet dropped, which is lab shorthand for a wall going slack. Dye poured straight through. Under the microscope the tight junctions between the cells looked ragged.
Genes for inflammation switched on. And nothing in rinse aid is an antibiotic. So why did the wall come apart?
Most people take vitamins to protect their health
But according to Harvard researchers…
👉 One of the most popular vitamins in the world may actually raise your blood sugar and increase your risk of heart disease and even cancer (❗️).
Millions take it every day, believing it’s helping…
When in reality, it could be quietly destroying their health.
Which vitamin do you think it is?

The truth may surprise you — and it could save your life.
Rinse aid is built to strip fat, and fat is what seals your gut wall
Your gut lining is a single sheet of cells. They are stitched to each other by protein clasps, and they sit on a slick fatty base.
Rinse aid exists to cut grease and break the surface tension of water. That is how it stops droplets drying on your glass. And it treats the fatty base in your gut the same way, so the clasps pull apart.
Food bits and gut microbes slip into the tissue underneath. Your immune system reads them as an invasion, and inflammation starts. Nothing here is killing your bacteria. The damage is to the wall they live behind. One family of molecules in that bottle does the dissolving.
Alcohol ethoxylates: the shine ingredient in nearly every rinse aid
Labels rarely print that name. Look for nonionic surfactants, or a code like C12-15 pareth. The same molecules sit in spot-free additives and all-in-one pods.
In Davos they tested each piece of the bottle on its own. Alcohol ethoxylates did the most damage, at the levels left sitting on a dry dish.
Eating out serves the bigger dose. A commercial machine finishes a cycle in 90 seconds, with no clean water rinse at the end. So the residue dries onto the plate and waits for your food. That plate is out of your hands. But the bottle under your sink is not.
Your dishwasher dries the load without any help from the blue bottle
Home machines finish with a long hot rinse and a heated dry. The bottle buys you a glossier glass, nothing more.
Skip the rinse aid and you get water spots, not dirty dishes. Let the steam out at the end and the load is dry in about 20 minutes. Vinegar in the dispenser is the tip going around, but acid chews on rubber seals, so keep it out.
While those clasps knit back together, feed them. These four do the rebuilding:
|
Pomegranate seeds Your gut bugs turn their ellagitannins into urolithin A, which pulls junctions tight. |
Walnuts The same ellagitannins, in a handful. |
|
|
Broccoli Sulforaphane switches on the signal that patches your lining. |
Pumpkin seeds Zinc, which your gut needs to hold junctions shut. |
|
None of it holds if the film goes back on tomorrow night. Stopping that takes ten seconds.
Tonight: turn the rinse aid dial to its lowest setting
Open the door and look at the inside panel. Beside the soap cup sits a small round cap, marked 1 through 6. Set it to 1. Or pop the cap off and let the dispenser run dry.
| ❎ Keep the dispenser full for spot-free shine | ✅ Dial it to 1, then air dry |
Start the wash, then prop the door open when it beeps. Your glasses come out a shade less glossy. And the seams in your gut stay shut.
Spotless is a coating.
Your gut wall is one cell thick.
The same team scraped measurable rinse aid off plates already washed, dried and stacked as ready to serve. Commercial machines left the most, because their whole cycle runs in the time your kettle takes to boil.
