Oats get sprayed with weedkiller days before they are cut

Farmers spray glyphosate on oats, wheat and lentils right before harvest. The target is not weeds. It is the crop: one heavy pass kills the plant, so the field dries and the combine rolls in early.

In the trade this is called desiccation, or a green burndown. You know it as breakfast.

So glyphosate rides into the bag with the grain. And when the CDC screened American urine, it turned up in eight of ten adults and nearly nine of ten kids. Human cells shrug… your gut bacteria may not.

54% of core gut bacteria species carry the exact enzyme glyphosate was built to jam

More than half. So which ones fall, and what makes the call?

Probiotic bacteria died in the dish while Salmonella walked away

Pere Puigbò, Marjo Helander and Suvi Ruuskanen at the University of Turku built a tool. It reads one bacterial enzyme and says whether glyphosate can jam it. They ran it across the human gut. The sensitive column took the bigger share.

Awad Shehata and Monika Krüger at Leipzig University had already done it the slow way. They dripped glyphosate onto live poultry gut cultures and watched which strains died.

Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, the two names on every yogurt tub, went down hard. Salmonella and Clostridium barely flinched. A chemical built for fields is picking sides among gut bugs. So how does a plant poison find a handle on a bacterium?

Hiding Your Hair? Try THIS (Results In 15 Days)

If you often hide your hair under hats or avoid photos due to hair loss

There’s something you need to know:

Your hair follicles aren't DEAD.

They're just ‘CLOGGED’.

Dead cells.

Hardened oils.

All sorts of gunk builds up on your scalp and blocks your hair follicles…

HALTING new hair growth.

Thankfully, once you clear the clog by doing this 2-3 times a week in your bathroom…

Your hair can surge back.

Thicker.

Stronger.

Full of volume.

One woman who tried it commented, "My husband looked at me and said, 'You're back.'"

I demonstrate how to “unclog” blocked follicles at home in this video (linked to a 32% reduction in hair loss):

To go from hiding to being proud and seen.

Weeds and your gut bugs share one assembly line. You were never on it.

Plants build three amino acids on a line called the shikimate pathway. Glyphosate clogs one machine on it. The weed starves and dies standing up.

Your own cells never had any of it. Food hands you those amino acids ready-made, so glyphosate finds nothing to grab. That was the whole safety case.

But inside your gut, that line is working nonstop. And the machine glyphosate clogs comes in two shapes. One has a pocket it slips into and sticks. The other sits at a different angle and lets it pass.

Bifidobacterium got the first shape. Salmonella got the second. So every spray weeds your gut, and the wrong plants wilt. One morning changes nothing. Thirty years of the same breakfast rewrites who lives there. And one crop carries the heaviest load.

No grain takes a bigger pre-harvest hit than oats

Oats ripen slowly and unevenly, so growers started spraying them to finish the job. That is why they top every residue table: oatmeal, granola bars, cereal, oat milk. Wheat, barley and lentils follow behind.

In the early 1990s the legal limit for glyphosate on oats was 0.1 parts per million. It now stands at 30, three hundred times higher, lifted to fit the spraying.

EWG set a children's safety mark of 160 parts per billion, then bought 28 oat products made for kids. Every one came back positive, and 26 broke the line. In April 2026 the group sued the EPA for sitting on a petition since 2018. Court dates crawl. Your bowl moves tomorrow.

Four breakfast grains that skip the burndown spray

One label blocks the spray outright. Organic rules forbid glyphosate, so a certified oat cannot be dried with it. Three more grains come off the field ready to mill:

Quinoa
Andean crop, no chemical finish
Millet
Short season, ripens all at once

Teff
Ethiopian grain, cut already dry
Certified organic oats
The same oat, grown under a ban

Swapping the whole cart is a big ask. There is a cheaper way to spend that dollar.

Buy organic for the single food you eat almost every morning

Skip the argument about whether organic is worth it. Sort your food by how often you eat it. The bowl you fill 300 mornings a year is almost all of your yearly total.

Name that food today. For a lot of readers it is oats, sliced bread or a granola bar. Make that one thing organic and leave the rest of the cart alone.

Organic berries, opened now and then Organic oats, eaten almost every day

One item, one label, and you are done before the checkout. And the part of you it protects is not the part you think.

Glyphosate cannot touch a human cell.
Half the bugs in your gut are not human cells.

Gut Check · Bonus Nugget

In 2010 the US patent office granted Monsanto a claim on glyphosate as a treatment for malaria parasites, which run the same shikimate machine. The jug on the shelf says herbicide. Its own paperwork says medicine for microbes.
