The bottle by your sink kills the bugs that keep your blood pressure down
You swish for twenty seconds and spit. The burn feels like proof it worked.
And it did work. That's the trouble. The label promises to kill germs in your mouth, and it keeps that promise. Including a thin film of bacteria at the back of your tongue that your arteries lean on.
Those bugs hold down one job no human cell can do. Sports scientists in England measured what goes missing when you wash them off.

Craig Cutler and Dr Raul Bescos at the University of Plymouth had 23 adults run for 30 minutes, twice. Each time they rinsed four times in the next 90 minutes. One day the bottle held mint water. The other day, 0.2% chlorhexidine — the antiseptic in dentist-strength rinses.
A hard walk leaves your blood pressure lower for hours. On mint-water days it sat 5.2 points lower an hour later. The antiseptic days? Two points. By hour two the gift was gone.
Their legs did the same work both times. Only the mouth changed. So what did that swish take away?
You can't turn nitrate into nitric oxide — your tongue bacteria do it for you
Nitrate is a plain compound packed into leafy greens and beets. Your body wants it, because nitrate is the raw stock for nitric oxide — the signal that tells a blood vessel to soften and widen.
But your cells own no tool for the first step. So the body hires it out. Up to a quarter of the nitrate in your blood gets pulled out by your spit glands and poured into your mouth, twenty times thicker than in blood.
Bacteria on the back of the tongue take the shift from there. They snap one oxygen atom off nitrate and hand back nitrite. You swallow, stomach acid finishes the build, and out comes nitric oxide.
So the whole chain rests on a crew of bugs you can rub out in one swish. And there's a product built to do it twice a day.
Chlorhexidine, alcohol, cetylpyridinium chloride: the label words to look for
Chlorhexidine hits hardest. The same Plymouth group put 36 adults on it for a week, twice a day. Nitrite in their spit and blood fell. Saliva turned acidic, and the cast of bugs shifted — Prevotella, Veillonella and Actinomyces thinned out, variety shrank.
Drugstore rinses hit softer, yet they still hit. Kaumudi Joshipura's team followed hundreds of overweight adults in Puerto Rico for three years. Twice-a-day swishers had roughly 55% higher odds of sliding into prediabetes or diabetes. High blood pressure showed up more often too.
Your teeth still need brushing. But the swap here costs nothing, and it starts in the produce aisle.

Queen Mary University in London gave adults with high blood pressure a cup of beet juice a day for four weeks. Pressure fell about 8 points over 4, and stiff arteries loosened by roughly a tenth.
Feeding the crew takes weeks. Washing it out takes twenty seconds. So here's tonight's move.
